THE STORY

Hello! I’m Andrew. I’m the main coffee roaster behind Focus Coffee Co, formerly Compass Coffee Co.

The name “Focus” is very personal to me for many reasons. In 2022 I found out that I was going to have to change my original coffee company name (Compass Coffee Co) to something new. There was another Compass Coffee in D.C. that started around the same time I did in 2013. I didn’t know much at all about business when I began and fast forward 10 years into roasting coffee, I was (politely) asked to change my name. The D.C. company had legitimized their business more formally, so it really made sense for them to reach out to similar names.

10 years with a brand made it very hard to me to handle this news and think about ever moving forward with a different name. Compass Coffee had become synonymous with me, and people knew me locally under that brand. After months of just processing the impending change I eventually landed on the word Focus.

To me, Focus is about remembering why you do what you do, and doing your best to stay aligned with that “North Star”. For me, I loved roasting coffee because of the people. Because of you. Roasting coffee has led me to conversations with people I otherwise would have never met, to learn stories I otherwise would have never heard.

This was a powerful reminder that I didn’t roast coffee because of a name or a brand, but my focus was on people, like you.

So I wake up every morning with a cup of coffee as an opportunity to reflect and refocus on what matters to me. My greatest mission in life, personally, is to follow Jesus, to be a great husband and father, and to help other people focus on what is important to them.
